The Stone of the Five Eras or Aztec calendar stone is a Mexica sculpture and perhaps the most famous work of Aztec sculpture.
The stone represents 5 eras of the Mexica cosmogony: in the center is Tonatiuh, the sun god of the Aztecs, representing the current era (Nahui Ollin) and it’s surrounded by representations of the four previous suns or eras, each era ended with the destruction of the world and humanity which were then recreated in the next era. The other four eras are represented by different catastrophic events: Nahui Quiahuitl (A rain of fire), Nahui Atl (A flood), Nahui Ehecatl (Hurricane winds) and Nahui Ocelotl (“Jaguars” / “Monsters” which devoured the humans).
